Mana Biography

The Japanese musician known as Mana was born in Hiroshima. Before Mana rose to fame as a guitarist for the rock band Malice Mizer, he studied classical music at home, under the tutelage of his parents, who were music instructors. Early inspirations for his music style include such hard metal bands as Motley Crue, and so it was no surprise that as a teenager Mana would move away from his classical roots and establish his first punk band while in high school.

In the early 1990’s, Mana founded the band Malice Mizer alongside musician Kozi, and established his own independent music label, Midi:Nette, through which to produce and distribute Malice Mizer’s music. Mana continued to perform and record with Malice Mizer until 2001, when the band launched a hiatus and Mana began work with Moi dix Mois, for which he serves as composer, producer, designer, and director for all productions. With Moi dix Mois, Mana has performed throught Europe and Japan, although in recent years he has also begun producing music for the cellist Kanon Wakeshima, whose debut album was released in 2008.

In addition to his work in music, Mana’s flair for fashion has in recent years led to the formation of his own clothing company, Moi-meme-Moitie. The line features upscale gothic-style clothing, and is accompanied by the publication Gothic & Lolita Bible, which features the line’s items.
