Iván Cornejo Biography

Iván Cornejo, born on June 5, 2004, in Riverside, California, is an American singer-songwriter within the regional Mexican genre. He began his musical journey by teaching himself to play the guitar through YouTube tutorials, learning his first song, Ritchie Valens' version of "La Bamba," in middle school. His early musical influences include T3R Elemento, Grupo Los de la O, and Natanael Cano. Cornejo’s songwriting was inspired by a personal experience, specifically a breakup during middle school, which fueled his creative process.

Cornejo’s debut album, "Alma Vacía", reached number two on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart and number seven on the Top Latin Albums chart, with 7,000 album-equivalent units sold. The album also peaked at number 156 on the Billboard 200 and remained in the top ten of the Regional Mexican Albums chart for 35 weeks. His songwriting credits contributed to his reaching the top of the Billboard Latin Songwriters chart in October 2021. The album was named one of the best albums of 2021 by The New York Times.

His single "Está Dañada" went viral on TikTok in September 2021 and peaked at number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the second regional Mexican song to chart on the Hot 100. Billboard magazine included Cornejo in their Artist on the Rise column in October 2021. His influence within the genre continued to grow with his music, which incorporates alternative rock elements through his guitar solos, reflecting his upbringing in a household where his mother and brother listened to that genre.

Cornejo’s second album, "Dañado", debuted at number one on the Regional Mexican Albums chart in June 2022 and spent 37 weeks at that position, the fourth longest in the chart’s history. It sold 8,000 album-equivalent units and achieved 11.9 million on-demand streams. The album also peaked at number four on the Top Latin Albums chart and reached number 28 on the Billboard 200. In 2022, he was nominated for New Regional Mexican Artist at Premios Juventud.

On July 28, 2023, Cornejo released the single "Aquí Te Espero," which peaked at number 89 on the Billboard Hot 100. He followed with the release of "Dónde Estás" three months later. In March 2024, he released "Baby Please," which became his first top 10 on the US Hot Latin Songs chart since 2021, peaking at number eight. 

Cornejo’s third studio album, "Mirada", was announced in June 2024 and officially released on July 19, 2024, through Interscope and Zaragoza Records, marking his debut with those labels. His music continues to blend traditional regional Mexican sounds with contemporary influences, emphasizing his development as an artist in the genre.
