Kamasi Washington, a distinguished American jazz saxophonist, has left an indelible mark on the world of music with his exceptional talent and innovative approach. Born on February 18, 1981, and raised in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, California, Washington's journey in music has been nothing short of extraordinary.
His musical journey began at the Academy of Music of Alexander Hamilton High School in Beverlywood, Los Angeles, where he honed his craft. Eager to delve deeper into the world of music, he enrolled in UCLA's Department of Ethnomusicology. During his time there, he had the privilege of playing alongside esteemed faculty members like Kenny Burrell, Gerald Wilson, and Billy Higgins. It was under the mentorship of these luminaries that Washington, along with pianist Cameron Graves and the Bruner brothers, Stephen ("Thundercat") and Ronald, formed a quartet that would make waves in the world of jazz. Together, they released their debut album, "Young Jazz Giants," in 2004 on Birdman Records.
Washington's musical prowess continued to flourish as he joined the Gerald Wilson Orchestra, contributing to their 2005 album, "In My Time." His name gained further recognition when he lent his saxophone skills to Kendrick Lamar's critically acclaimed album, "To Pimp a Butterfly."
In May 2015, Kamasi Washington embarked on his solo career with the release of "The Epic," a groundbreaking work that solidified his position as a leading figure in contemporary jazz. He followed up with the mini-album/EP "Harmony of Difference" in September 2017. The momentum continued with his second full-length studio album, "Heaven and Earth," released in June 2018, accompanied by the EP "The Choice" just a week later.
Washington's collaborative spirit has led him to perform alongside a diverse array of musicians, including jazz icons like Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, rap legends like Nas and Snoop Dogg, and genre-blurring artists like Lauryn Hill and Flying Lotus.
In June 2020, Washington, alongside Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, and 9th Wonder, announced the formation of the supergroup Dinner Party. Their debut extended play, titled "Dinner Party," was released on July 10, 2020, featuring the single "Freeze Tag."
Continuing to make his mark on the music scene, Kamasi Washington released "Sun Kissed Child" in June 2021 as part of The Undefeated's Music for the Movement series. Furthermore, in 2021, Washington and his band contributed a remarkable cover of Metallica's "My Friend of Misery" to the charity tribute album "The Metallica Blacklist."
Kamasi Washington's musical journey has been defined by innovation, collaboration, and a relentless pursuit of artistic excellence, earning him a well-deserved place among the most influential figures in contemporary jazz.
