Band of Horses is an American rock band formed in 2004 in Seattle, Washington. The band's founder and consistent member, singer-songwriter Ben Bridwell, spearheads their musical journey through numerous lineup changes. As of their latest incarnation, the band comprises long-serving members Creighton Barrett on drums and Ryan Monroe on keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals, alongside Matt Gentling on bass and Brett Nash on guitar and backing vocals.
Formation and Early Years (2004–2006): Band of Horses emerged after the disbandment of Ben Bridwell's previous ensemble, Carissa's Wierd, in 2004. The original lineup featured Bridwell, Chris Early on bass, Tim Meinig on drums, and the addition of Mat Brooke on guitar and vocals. Their initial recognition came after opening for Iron & Wine during local Seattle shows. In 2005, the band unveiled their Tour EP, available at concerts and on Sub Pop's website.
Debut Album and Transition (2006): In 2006, Band of Horses released their debut full-length album, "Everything All the Time," produced by Phil Ek. This album included both the original lineup and the contribution of drummer Sera Cahoone. The single "The Funeral" garnered significant attention and found its way into various media.
Cease to Begin and Lineup Changes (2007–2009): Prior to recording their second album, Bridwell relocated the band to his South Carolina hometown. Their touring lineup grew to include Matt Gentling on bass and Robin Peringer on guitar. "Cease to Begin" arrived in 2007 and featured hit tracks such as "No One's Gonna Love You." The departure of Joe Arnone marked a pivotal moment as the band transformed into a six-member unit.
Infinite Arms and Continued Success (2010–2011): The band initiated work on their third album, "Infinite Arms," in 2009, which saw the departure of Rob Hampton and Bridwell taking the lead guitar role. Released in 2010, the album received critical acclaim and charted well, with songs like "Laredo" achieving recognition. Band of Horses extensively toured in 2010, participating in numerous festivals and opening for acts such as Pearl Jam.
Mirage Rock and Fourth Album (2012–2013): Collaborating with producer Glyn Johns in 2012, the band unveiled their fourth album, "Mirage Rock," featuring singles like "Knock Knock." The music video for "Knock Knock" garnered attention for its desert-themed visuals, contributing to the band's growing reputation for crafting engaging rock music.
Acoustic at the Ryman and Why Are You OK (2014–2020): In 2014, Band of Horses released "Acoustic at the Ryman," a live album showcasing stripped-down renditions of their songs. The band's fifth studio album, "Why Are You OK," produced by Jason Lytle, was released in 2016. The departures of Tyler Ramsey and Bill Reynolds in 2017 led to changes in the lineup.
Things Are Great and Recent Developments (2021–present): In 2021, Band of Horses marked their return with the single "Crutch" and the announcement of their sixth album, "Things Are Great." This album signaled a return to their earlier sound and ethos, featuring Matt Gentling and Brett Nash in the lineup.
Over the years, Band of Horses has cultivated a distinctive musical style that blends rock and folk elements, earning them critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base. Their contributions have left an enduring imprint on the alternative rock landscape, solidifying their place in contemporary music history.
