Doechii Biography

Known professionally as Doechii, Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon was born on August 14, 1998, in Tampa, Florida. She grew up in Tampa, where she developed interests in dancing and acting, attending a performing arts high school. She began making music in 2015 under the name Iamdoechii, later shortening it to Doechii, and started releasing songs on SoundCloud in 2016. Her early singles, including "Girls" and "Spookie Coochie," laid the groundwork for her emerging music career.

Her song "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake" gained viral popularity in 2021, which led to performances on the BET Hip Hop Awards and attracted attention from record labels. She released her 2020 EP Oh the Places You'll Go, with "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake" as its lead single. Following this, she released her third EP Bra-Less and performed at the BET Hip-Hop Awards with Isaiah Rashad, also appearing on his track "Wat U Sed." She supported SZA on her 2021 tour.

In 2022, Doechii signed with Capitol Records and Top Dawg Entertainment, becoming the first female artist signed to the TDE imprint. Her debut single on the labels, "Persuasive," was followed by a guest appearance on David Guetta and Afrojack's "Trampoline," which reached number 26 on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. She released the single "Crazy" and her she / her / black bitch EP, which featured collaborations with SZA and Rico Nasty. She also released "Stressed" in October 2022.

In 2023, Doechii collaborated with Kodak Black on "What It Is (Block Boy)," which became her first Billboard Hot 100 entry, reaching number 41. She released additional singles, including "Universal Swamp Anthem," "Booty Drop," and "Pacer." Later, she featured on the remix of the Weeknd and Playboi Carti's "Timeless." Her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal was released in August 2024, peaking inside the top 10 of the Billboard 200. The album included singles like "Nissan Altima," "Boom Bap," and "Denial Is a River," with the bonus track "Anxiety" debuting in the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Her 2024 project earned her three Grammy nominations, including Best Rap Album, which she won at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. She became the third woman to win in that category. In 2025, she featured on tracks such as Tyler, the Creator's "Balloon" and Jennie's "ExtraL." Billboard Women in Music named her Woman of the Year in 2025, recognizing her achievements and influence within the music industry.
