The National Parks, an indie folk band hailing from Provo, Utah, have etched their mark on the American music scene. Comprising four talented members - Brady Parks (guitar and lead vocals), Sydney Macfarlane (keyboards and vocals), Cam Brannelly (drums), and Megan Taylor Parks (fiddle and vocals) - they've crafted a sound that resonates with fans far and wide.
Their musical journey commenced in 2013, a year that saw the birth of the band. It all began with Brady Parks, the creative force behind the group, while he was studying advertising design at Brigham Young University in Provo. Brady started penning acoustic-heavy narrative folk tunes, laying the foundation for what would become The National Parks. The journey kicked off with a band named "Brady Parks and the IndiAnns," which recorded an album titled "The Mossy Mountain," released on iTunes and Spotify in February 2012.
The band's initial success propelled them to embark on a Kickstarter campaign for their debut album, "Young." Despite a few lineup changes, The National Parks emerged, and their debut public performance took place on March 15, 2013. The band's enigmatic marketing campaign, asking, "Who are The National Parks?" drew attention and curiosity. They released "Young" in 2013, recorded with producer Scott Wiley, achieving an impressive #13 spot on the iTunes singer/songwriter chart. In 2014, they contributed the single "As We Ran" to the documentary film "Love in the Tetons," donating the first month's proceeds to the National Parks Conservation Association.
The band continued to tour and gain recognition, with their second album, "Until I Live," independently released in September 2015. This album, produced once again by Scott Wiley, reached #52 on the iTunes Pop Chart and #5 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers Chart for the Mountain Region. Notably, The National Parks earned the title of Utah's "Band of the Year" from Salt Lake City Weekly in March 2016.
Building on their growing reputation, The National Parks' music garnered international attention when "Helsinki" premiered on All Songs Considered in January 2015. Their music has been favorably compared to acts like Foster the People, The Civil Wars, and Mumford & Sons. Besides headlining their own shows, the band has shared stages with notable artists such as Andy Grammer, Peter Bjorn and John, The Lone Bellow, LeAnn Rimes, and The Moth & The Flame, gracing renowned festivals like South by Southwest and Canadian Music Week.
In August 2017, the band announced their third album, "Places," and kicked off the "Places Tour." The album featured a mix of folk-pop with acoustic guitar and violin elements, infused with electronic influences. After wrapping up the tour, The National Parks continued to evolve, releasing new music like "I Can Feel It" in March 2019.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the band persevered, blessing their fans with a new album, "Wildflower," in June 2020. In the face of venue closures and social distancing restrictions, they adapted with the " Campfire Tour," providing an intimate musical experience at 12 select locations.
In March 2023, The National Parks continued their musical journey with the release of "8th Wonder." Their dedication to creating heartfelt, genre-blending music ensures that they remain an enduring presence in the indie folk scene, captivating audiences and inspiring new generations of music lovers.
